Free State Premier Ace Magashule has defended his decision not to suspend Free State Health MEC Benny Malakoane, who was arrested last week.

Malakoane was arrested by the Hawks on charges of fraud, corruption and money laundering.

Magashule said Malokoane was innocent until proven guilty. “I do not want to tarnish his reputation.”

Addressing community development workers (CDW) at the President Hotel, Bloemfontein, on Monday, Magashule said the Free State government has shown its willingness to voluntarily participate in self-assessment that promotes the principles of good governance, citizen empowerment and citizen participation.

Magashule said Operation Hlasela was driven by the goal to improve service delivery.

Operation Hlasela is under investigation by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

Public Protector spokesperson Kgalalelo Masibi said Madonsela was currently quality-assuring the provisional report.

“The Public Protector will confidentially share the provisional report with affected parties when the quality-assurance process is done,” said Masibi.

Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration Ayanda Dlodlo, who spoke at the same event, said| her department was deploying anticorruption officials in all spheres of local government.
