‘No sympathy’ for Sheldean’s killer

Sheldean Human’s parents “feel sorry” for the parents of Andrew Jordaan, the man who murdered her, but have no sympathy for him.

Jordaan was killed by a fellow prisoner in Leeuwkop prison in Sunninghill, Johannesburg, on Sunday.

“I feel sorry for his parents. It’s not nice to lose a child. It’s also not easy to live with it,” said Wikus Human yesterday.

“They have a heavy and difficult road ahead of them. It’s not something that goes away easily or which you forget.”

But he only had sympathy for Jordaan’s parents, not for Jordaan.

“Justice happened in jail. He got what he dished out,” he said.

Jordaan was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2008 for the murder of Sheldean (7) the previous year.

He was sentenced to an additional 33 years and three months in prison for kidnapping Sheldean, attempting to rape her, raping her friend and indecently assaulting her as well as for the dagga found in his possession.

Jordaan was transferred to Leeuwkop prison last year due to repair work being done to Pretoria Central prison.

Jordaan’s brother-in-law, Anton Nortjé, said yesterday afternoon his family is “in a state”.

Nortjé said correction services officials had told them Jordaan had been killed by a fellow prisoner in his cell on Sunday morning.

“Prisoners can walk outside on Sundays. Andrew and another prisoner remained in the cell,” said Nortjé.

“Prisoners sleep in bunk beds. Andrew was sleeping on the top bed.

“The prisoner pulled Andrew from the bed and his head hit the cement floor. He then hit Andrew’s head against the floor another four or five times.”

Correctional Services spokesperson Ofentse Morwane said a prisoner who was serving 25 years for murder and robbery, had allegedly killed Jordaan.

Morwane said the motive was still unknown, but an internal investigation would be held.
The prisoner has been held in a single cell since the incident.

“There are incidents from time to time in prison, but it is not so serious that it leads to one prisoner murdering another. This is a unique incident,” said Morwane.

Sheldean’s mother, Elize Human, said it was always difficult for her around this time of the year.

On Saturday it will be five years since Sheldean disappeared. Her body was found two weeks later in a stormwater pipe.

The news of Jordaan’s murder has not yet sunk in, she said.

“In the past five years I never thought of him [Jordaan]. I didn’t even look at him in court. I can’t say if I hate him,” she said.

“But I know what it’s like to lose a child. I have sympathy for his parents.”
