Noah’s stepdad charged with rape

Comedian Trevor Noah’s stepfather, Ngisaveni Shingange, has been arrested and charged with rape.

Shingange was due to be sentenced for attempted murder at the Johannesburg Magistrates Court on Friday.

But when the case began, it emerged that Shingange (49), was in Johannesburg Prison – the notorious jail nicknamed Sun City.

He was convicted earlier this year of trying to kill Noah’s mother, Nombuyiselo, three years ago. He shot her in the back and face, shattering her jaw, piercing her skull, nose and ear, leaving her unable to speak properly.

State prosecutor Goitsimang Gorewang told the court that Shingange had been arrested in connection with rape. He could give no further details, like when or where the alleged incident had occurred.

The matter was postponed to May 25.

Shingange was out on bail until Friday, but because of his failure to appear in court he forfeited his bail.

Gorewang said Shingange had been warned not commit any crime while he was on bail.

The court heard during Shingange’s trial that Nombuyiselo Noah’s offence, in her ex-husband’s eyes, was moving out of a nearby backyard shack she was renting and getting engaged to her current husband, Sifiso Khoza. She and Shingange were divorced when this happened.

Shingange and Nombuyiselo married in 1992 and were divorced in 1996.

They lived together until 2002, when Nombuyiselo was forced to move to a backyard shack on the property because of the physical and emotional abuse she endured at the hands of husband. Nombuyiselo and her 18-month-old son lived in the house for seven years, until she got engaged to Khoza in 2009. Shingange tracked her down and tried to kill her in front of their youngest son.

The case took three years to be finalised even though Shingange had pleaded guilty to attempted murder.

Nombuyiselo told City Press she was shocked to learn that Shingange had been arrested for rape.

She said: “God works in mysterious ways. He hid his true character in court but now it is coming out. That man put me through hell and my fear was that if he was freed, he would do the same to some innocent woman,” Nombuyiselo said.

Shingange’s lawyer, Victor Nkwashu, refused to give more details about his client’s arrest in connection with the rape charge.
