Nominations for Cosatu positions delayed

2009-09-22 13:00

Nominations for Cosatu positions closed at noon today following a

two-hour delay of the federations 10th national congress, general secretary

Zwelinzima Vavi told delegates.

Apart from the delay in the conference itself, many positions were

still without nominations.

An exception was the post of treasurer which is being contested by

more than one candidate.

The Food and Allied Workers’ Union has withdrawn the nomination of

Cosatu Mpumalanga chairperson Raymond Mngumi for the post.

The gender of the potential candidate for treasurer has also been

an issue.

Yesterday, Cosatu president Sidumo Dlamini said the departure of

the previous treasurer, who was a woman, had left the executive leadership

completely male.

This led to murmurs similar to those made when Dlamini announced

that the delegation from the South African Football Player’s Union was also

completely male.
