Nomvula Mokonyane condemns attacks on foreign nationals

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane condemned attacks on foreign nationals in Duduza on the East Rand.

“We strongly condemn violence on foreign nationals as we equally condemn violence on South Africans,” Mokonyane said today in a statement.

Her statement followed attacks on foreign shop owners on Tuesday. Residents in the township have been clashing with foreigners for months.

On August 16, 200 shops belonging to Somalis were closed down and 800 people were displaced.

Mokonyane said the provincial government would do everything in its power to ensure that any form of violence was rooted out and citizens of Duduza lived without fear of being attacked.

She called on police to restore peace in the township.

She was aware of allegations that police were demanding bribes from foreign-owned businesses to provide protection.

“We take note of the allegations levelled against the police on this matter and we will act on those where evidence is provided,” said Mokonyane.

Police spokesperson Captain Julia Classen today said the situation had stabilised in the area and police were patrolling the streets.
