North West premier vows to tackle service delivery

2011-02-18 14:32

North West premier Thandi Modise today vowed to improve service delivery in municipalities across the province.

Delivering her state of the province address in the provincial legislature in Mahikeng, she said resolving the region’s water crisis was one priority.

The provincial government had set aside R50 million for water and sanitation projects in seven municipalities.

Modise said the provincial government was working closely with the water boards and the national department of water affairs to resolve water problems in the province.

On healthcare, she said work was nearing completion on the construction of the R108 million Tlhabane Community Health Centre in Rustenburg.

“The project is now 95% complete and due for final completion by the end of next month.

“We also intend to expedite the construction of the R475 million Brits Hospital, which is due for completion in June 2012.

“We are also planning to start one of the biggest revitalisation projects in Bophelong Psychiatric Hospital. This will create temporary and permanent jobs,” she said.

Modise also announced the establishment of a provincial planning commission to “co-ordinate planning systems and ensure implementation of outcomes-based performance across spheres of government”.

Extracts from Modise’s address were sent to Sapa.
