Not in the name of Islam

2015-01-18 15:00

The senseless massacre of journalists working for the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has once more put a stain on Islam, which is followed by millions of people throughout the world.

The silencing of Charlie Hebdo is nothing but an act of cowardice, proving that extremists have resolved to use the barrel of a gun and fear tactics to achieve their nefarious ends.

Democracy is a political ideology that guarantees many rights, including the right to freedom of speech, freedom of expression and artistic prowess.

Charlie Hebdo is France’s Zapiro. The magazine used the might of the pen to set the agenda in France. It also used satire to provoke debate and expose the excesses of the world’s elite.

Charlie Hebdo tackled what is considered taboo in the 21st century. Both Jesus Christ and the Prophet Muhammad were caricatured on its pages.

As long as the media avoids defamation and slander, it has the right to make and formulate opinions about politics, religion and any social issue it deems is in the interests of the public.

Those who killed Charlie Hebdo’s journalists in the name of Islam could have simply provided the public with an alternative view instead of resorting to extremism and blemishing Islam as a religion.

However, the onus lies on all Muslims throughout the world to stand up and say: “Not in the name of Islam.”
