Ntombi flies solo with African Sexy

2010-09-12 13:27

Move over Chomee, here comes African Sexy.

Real name Ntombi Ngcobo.

Music couple Linah Khama and Bheki Ngcobo’s daughter has landed on the scene with what promises to be an explosive package – complete with a hot look to rival Arthur Mafokate’s protégé.

But Ntombi’s solo career has marked the end of the line for Maskandi group Amaponi, which shot Ngcobo and her siblings to fame.

The group – which consisted of Ntombi, Nkosinathi, Jabulani and Vusiwe Ngcobo – has not released an album in the past five years despite assurances by their parents, Linah (Ebony) and Bheki (Hhashi Elimhlophe), that another album was in the pipeline.

In March this year, Ntombi released a pop/reggae album titled African Sexy, while her siblings were all busy with their own careers.

Despite this, their parents are still adamant that Amaponi was not washed up.

“We gave them blessings, but they still have to release as Amaponi,” said Bheki.

The younger Ngcobos paint a different picture.

“We are no longer living together as we used to.

Besides, going different directions didn’t come as a surprise to us,” said Ntombi.

Jabulani has turned to house music after studying sound engineering.

“When we grew up we were only exposed to maskanda music.

Now I’m more into house music,” said Jabulani.

Amaponi, who made fame with the Tshiki layi layi single, were formed in 1998 and debuted with the album Amasiko.

Nkosinathi, who was now focusing on hip-hop music, said: “I am now focusing on my business and making my label, Poniwear, known.”

Although they have abandoned what kept them together, they say they are still supportive of each other.

According to Ntombi, Jabulani contributed to the production of songs on her album, including the single Amadoda.

The siblings started in this music industry when Nkosinathi was 15 years old, Jabu was eight, Ntombi 13 and Vusiwe five.

Vusiwe, who is now studying law, has abandoned the music industry.
