Obama to target SA youth during visit

2011-06-15 07:43

Washington – First Lady Michelle Obama will make an official visit to South Africa this month, focusing on youth leadership, education, health and wellness.

She will travel to Johannesburg and Cape Town and Gaborone in neighbouring Botswana from June 21-26.

Obama will speak to a forum of young women who are involved in social and economic initiatives in their home countries.

“Africa’s future will be shaped by its growing and dynamic youth population,” the White House said.

Obama has made similar youth advocacy visits to Brazil, Chile, El Salvador, India, Mexico and Britain.

“Building stronger and more enduring relationships with Africa’s emerging young leaders, tapping the strength and potential of African women, and investing in the health and wellbeing of its children upholds core American values and advances American interests,” the White House said.

The White House hosted a similar event, the President’s Forum with Young African Leaders, in August.

Obama has made youth issues, particularly combating childhood obesity in the US, a focus of her time as the First Lady.

Her mother, Marian Robinson, and her daughters, Malia and Sasha, will join her during the visits.
