I remember Eddie Makhosonke Zondi, my friend, my business partner and my comrade in music arms.

Penning this eulogy is probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to do because all of this feels unreal. How could he be gone? We were together hours before he departed.

Eddie loved music. He was the merchant of love, the original Mr Smooth. He mastered the R&B and soul catalogue. It was no fluke that he hosted the Romantic Repertoire. His skill, finesse and flair behind the mic made him the ultimate Romeo.

He loved his wine.

Whenever he saw me and Timothy Mogogole (Eddie’s producer and compiler at Metro FM) eating takeaways, he always encouraged us to get married so that we could have wholesome home-cooked meals made with love by our spouses.

He loved Best Of Me by Anthony Hamilton and Tevin Campbell’s songs, especially Dandelion.

Who could forget his hugely popular compilation records? Who could forget the warmth, love and romance he engendered in our homes, cars, shisa nyamas and hang-out spots every Sunday afternoon? I will never forget the sight of him presenting his show with his eyes wide shut, as if to be one in spirit with the music.

Eddie worked hard and was focused. His family was everything to him. It was all about providing a better life for his wife and children.

Go well Eddie. Let the angels of heaven play you some Whitney Houston or Luther Vandross.

So many careers owe you so much. I owe you for your great friendship and the brotherhood we shared. Cheers, old mate. You were born to amuse, to inspire, to delight. Here one day, gone one night. Gone too soon.
