Official charged with selling false birth documents

A Home Affairs official appeared in the Butterworth Magistrates Court on fraud charges today, Eastern Cape police said.

Nomsuneko Mceli (51) was arrested on January 20 in connection with the sale of false birth certificates to women seeking fraudulent grants.

Today, the case was postponed to April 12. Mceli was granted bail at R1 000, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

Manatha said that the woman is believed to have been working as a Home Affairs clerk at the time of the arrest.
