Veteran South African golfer David Frost says he is gratified by adding a senior major to his list of acquisitions.

This follows his breathtaking win in the Regions Tradition at Shoal Creek, Alabama, in the US, last Sunday, where he parred the last two holes to beat American Fred Couples by a stroke and claim his fifth victory on the PGA Champions Tour.

The Tradition is one of the five majors recognised by the US-based tour, the world’s leading sanctioning body for professional golfers aged 50 years and older.

The 53-year-old Frost, from Paarl, Western Cape, who made his mark as a professional on the Sunshine Tour at the age of 19 before graduating to the top flight of the US and European tours, has made the grade by becoming the country’s top golfing “old-timer”.

Frost told City Press this week: “I suppose you really want to have won a major on the regular tour, but these days you get quite a lot of recognition for winning a seniors’ major. I’ve worked really hard on my game in the past few years, so it is gratifying.”

He credited his move to rising German coach Christian Neumaier and improved fitness for helping him face down the tricky American foe, Couples, on his way to capturing his first-ever major after 17 attempts on the seniors’ tour.

“I realised I needed to be fitter so I maintain a regular gym programme,” said Frost. “Christian has been brilliant in helping me be less mechanical, with a more relaxed swing.”

Frost’s victory has earned him accolades on the Sunshine Tour, a local sanctioning body that shaped his career locally before he broke out on to the international circuit.

Duncan Cruickshank, the Sunshine Tour’s marketing director, said: “As the Sunshine Tour, we are proud to have helped produce a player in the mould of someone like Frost.

“He won top events in the country before dominating the US and European Tours at the height of his career over the years. Winning a major as a senior is a special achievement which shows that Frost’s sparkling career reflects well on the Sunshine Tour itself.”

Frost, who turned professional in 1981, has an accomplished record with several achievements at home and abroad during a distinguished golfing run.

From 1985, the player was primarily on the US Tour, where he won 10 tournaments. His local achievements include three Million Dollar Challenge conquests at Sun City in 1989, 1990 and 1992.

He clinched the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit in 1998/1999 and was a member of the international team at the inaugural President’s Cup in 1994.

While still campaigning at home, Frost held the honour of captaining South Africa to victory in the Alfred Dunhill Scotland – his team-mates were Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, who are now also veterans in their own right.
