Ohio – American Olympic gold medallist Paul Hamm has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a taxi driver in a dispute over a $23 (R164) cab fare.

Police said the 2004 Athens Olympic gymnastics overall champion has been charged with assault and two misdemeanours.

Police said a taxi driver claimed he was hit and kicked by a customer after an argument broke out over the fare. The taxi’s window was also damaged.

The 28-year-old Hamm, who now works as an assistant coach at Ohio State University, was released on bail. He is expected to be back in court on September 15.

Hamm’s agent, Sheryl Shade, declined to comment.
