On the 1s and 2s: Travelling with talent

2010-10-11 09:50

This weekend I found myself traversing a little corner of Free State I had never been to before.

The earthy, green mountains transported me to a fantastic place I had never been before. There was something calming about the views, even the air smelt and felt different.

In the background playing was my newest discovery: a local classical music CD of Siphiwo titled Hope. You’d remember him as the tenor who recorded a song for the World Cup official CD and then passed on a few days before the opening ceremony at Soccer City (now FNB Stadium).

His rendition of a Lebo M composition, Nguwe, was the perfect soundtrack to my journey as we meandered through the uphills and downhills of the Pass.“Death be not proud,” as the old adage goes, I thought to myself.

How could a talent of such immense depths pass on so early before hitting the big time, with just one more inch before tasting the benefits of his God-given talent?

It boggled my mind. You see Siphiwo’s voice is world class, in fact it took my mother some convincing before she could accept that the voice booming from the car speakers belonged to a Xhosa man. She’d already made up her mind that he was an Italian tenor.

I am so glad that at that very moment, when I was overwhelmed by the pristine beauty of nature, I took it all in with Siphiwo’s music.

It reminded me once more that on a long trip music selection is as essential as planning your route, whether to take the N3 to get to Ficksburg and then Lesotho or the N1 branching in Kroonstad.I now know that this CD has found a permanent place on my travelling troupe that includes Khadja Nin’s Ya Pili, Dionne Warwick’s 40th Anniversary Album, Lira’s Feel Good and Sibongile Khumalo’s Immortal Secrets.Who do you always travel with?
