On the box

MTV Video Music Awards

MTV (DStv channel 130), Monday, 8pm

The “loudest and biggest” celebration of music returns with no shortage of leading artists on the bill.

This year’s MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), dubbed the “Oscars of the youth”, take place at The Forum, Inglewood, California, today. Our very own on- air personalities, 5FM DJ Roger Goode and MTV star Nomuzi Mabena, give South African audiences a glimpse of the red carpet happenings as they interact with the stars gracing this music awards show.

The must-see award ceremony honours the best music videos in showbiz with spirited performances and breathtaking production sets in their 20th year of being at the cutting edge of music and popular culture.

The show premieres live on MTV tomorrow at 3am, and the prime-time premiere is on at 9pm for South African viewers.

The red carpet show promises to be the ideal prelude to the ceremony with all the famous faces in their best (or worst) fashion.

The performance by Grammy Award-nominated superstar Nicki Minaj is set to be spectacular. Minaj is no stranger to the VMA stage.

In her short but illustrious career as a female rapper and performer, Minaj has earned herself many accolades and is one of the most charted female artists in the history of music.

Other notable performers who will entertain on the night include Beyoncé (who will be honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award), Usher, Rita Ora, Iggy Azalea, Maroon 5, and 5 Seconds of Summer. – Siyabonga Sithole
