A 17-year-old boy died and four people went missing in weather-related incidents in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

At Msintsane, near Mthatha, the teen died and a 16-year-old girl was injured when they were struck by lightning.

The teenagers were caught in a thunderstorm on their way home yesterday, the police’s Lieutenant Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

“The boy died and the girl is in a critical condition in hospital. She suffered burn wounds.”

In the Msinga area in northern KwaZulu-Natal, four people went missing after a severe thunderstorm.

Further details on what happened to the four were not immediately available, spokesperson Lennox Mabaso said today.

Houses were flooded when the uThukela River burst its banks after the rain started yesterday around 6pm.

Cooperative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube had dispatched disaster teams to help affected residents. Dube would visit the area this morning to assess the damage.

National Freedom Party president Zanele KaMagwaza Msibi appealed for help, saying she would visit the area.

“We appeal to the provincial government to declare the area of Msinga a provincial disaster area so that local residents can get the help they need,” she said in a statement.
