Only half the razzmatazz this year

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula has become a little more conservative this year after splurging R46 million on the innaugural South African Sports Awards last year.

This year, Mr Razzmatazz, as Mbalula is known, has almost halved the the event’s budget to an estimated R27 million.

This comes after the brouhaha earlier this year when City Press reported that Mbalula was considering hiring Beyonce to entertain the gathering at
an estimated R4 million.

This week, the organisers confirmed that tonight’s show will be an all-local extravaganza featuring the likes of the Soweto Gospel Choir, jazz singers Sibongile Khumalo and Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse; and pop singers Toya DeLazy, PJ Powers, Zonke and Lira.

There will also be a hip-hop mash-up from rappers JR, Jack Parrow and Die Heuwels Fantasties.

The event will not take place at an over-night venue time around as it has moved from Sun City to the Sandton Convention Centre in northern Joburg.

As for celebrity guests, Brandy, Vivica Fox and Regina King will not be walking the red carpet as they did last year.

Instead, visiting tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams will be the special guests. Venus will present the Sportsman of the Year with Disability award and Serena the Sportsman of the Year award.

A three-course meal of summer chicken salad, beef fillet mignon and confit chicken ballantine and a selection of chocolate truffles will be served.

The awards will be broadcast live at 8pm on SABC1 and SuperSport 4 tonight.
