Only the best for well-oiled ministers

2009-09-12 16:05

SOUTH Africa’s ministers cruise around the country in bling wheels at the expense of the taxpayer.

And although the government handbook allows them to drive the luxury cars, questions on morality have come back to haunt some of them, considering the recession biting the country and the poverty faced by many South Africans.

For three weeks City Press tried to find out what President Jacob Zuma and his deputy Kgalema Motlanthe are driven around in – to no avail.

Zuma’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, promised to get back to us but our phones have yet to ring.

Motlanthe’s spokesperson, Steyn Speed, refused to divulge what his boss drove and referred all questions to the police.

City Press was in turn referred to the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) by the SAPS.

Government spokesperson Themba Maseko could not tell us what the rest of the ministers drive, but the GCIS was able to provide these details.
