The Eastern Cape’s tourism authorities are asking ordinary people to open their homes to visitors flocking to the province ahead of Nelson Mandela’s funeral on Sunday.

“Due to the influx of potential visitors, and that formal accommodation is almost full in the area, the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency (ECPTA) has appealed to the communities of Qunu and Mthatha in the Eastern Cape to make their homes available to visitors to the area,” the organisation said in a statement today.

“We are requesting that the home owners in the area who are able and willing to share their homes with our visitors register with ECPTA. Members of the public can go to where they will be able to upload their details electronically,” Eastern Cape Tourism’s Eddie Marafane said.

People can also visit the ECPTA’s Mthatha or East London regional offices to register manually, Marafane said.

“This call for accommodation comes about as the demand for accommodation in the area is on the increase following Tata Madiba’s death on Thursday,” Marafane said.

“As of this morning, 92% of the formal accommodation establishments had been booked up in Mthatha and surrounds.”
