Oppikoppi 18 to increase capacity

2012-05-22 07:04

The Oppikoppi organisers have announced some major plans for this year’s festival, three months before the event kicks off.

The festival is held annually on the outskirts of the small town of Northam and is expected to draw thousands of mostly rock music fans this year.

The 18th anniversary of the festival has been themed Sweet Thing.

“We are confident of increasing the capacity somewhat (probably 18 000 to 20 000). The Koppi family is hard at work trying to expand the camping terrain (underbrush clearing, new dirt road creation) and laying out more water reticulation (our single biggest headache),” organisers said in a statement to the press.

“In other words it is strongly encouraged that you either buy tickets in advance or stay in the city; there will probably be no sales at the gate.”

‘Hoping to feature more tunes’

The organisers further stated that they are hoping to have seven different stages erected.

“Some stages are being broken down, new ones built, moved or expanded. We are hoping to feature more tunes, more genres but still keep a nice comfortable feel,” they said.

It was also announced that Standard Bank has once again partnered with the festival.

The bank will subsidise tickets for all music lovers who want to attend the festivities.

Tickets cost R700 from the Oppikoppi Facebook page, R750 at Ticketbreak.co.za and R600 when bought through the Standard Bank youth portal.

The event runs from August 9-11.
