Oscar Pistorius pleads not guilty: ‘I defended Reeva and I’

Paralympian Oscar Pistorius woke up when he heard a noise from the bathroom on February 14 last year, the day on which he shot dead his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, the high court in Pretoria has heard.

“Reeva must have gone to a toilet ...” Pistorius’ attorney, Kenny Oldwage, read out in court today – on the first day of the Pistorius murder trial.

“I approached the bathroom to defend Reeva and I.”

Pistorius pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder and contraventions of the Firearms Control Act, including possession of ammunition without a licence.

The 27-year-old is accused of murdering Steenkamp at his Pretoria home last year.
