Oscar countdown: Four hotties who’ll never win

2011-02-26 19:18

They have been nominated numerous times for the golden statuette but they’ve never won – and they probably never will.

They are the pretty boy brigade who seem to be punished for their good looks:

» Brad Pitt
Was it the scene in Thelma and Louise in which he revealed his washboard abs that cost him his Oscar?

His split from American sweetheart Jennifer Aniston and his relationship with Angelina Jolie probably didn’t help.

The fact that the blue-eyed Robert Redford look-a-like has only been nominated twice for an Oscar – for Twelve Monkeys and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – makes it clear what Hollywood thinks of him.

» Leonardo DiCaprio
He’s been overlooked so many times that he might as well be starring in a Leon Schuster movie.

His performance in Inception was brilliant but did not even garner a nomination, just like The Departed was ignored. He has three Oscar nominations under his belt.

» Mark Wahlberg
Perhaps it’s those billboard ads in which Wahlberg poses in his Calvin Klein underwear that ruined his chances.

The actor has only been nominated for two Oscars – one for The Departed and most recently for The Fighter.

Charming good looks combined with a hoodlum attitude may well see the Boston-bred action man never give his acceptance speech.

» Johnny Depp
The man who proved his acting chops in Edward Scissorhands made a concerted effort to ditch the pretty boy image after his 21 Jump Street days.

Even with roles like Donny Brasco and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this swashbuckling pirate has never had the chance to say: “I’d like to thank the Academy”.

Like DiCaprio, he has been nominated three times.
