Grieving Steenkamps say they have received no condolences from the Pistorius family.

Reeva Steenkamp’s family say they have received no word from Oscar Pistorius, nor any of his relatives, since she was killed by the Paralympic star.

Although Pistorius has admitted to shooting dead the popular model and law graduate in his en-suite bathroom, Reeva’s uncle, Michael Steenkamp, said that nobody from the Pistorius family had contacted them to say they were sorry for their loss.

The Pistorius family sent a bouquet of flowers and a card.

“They have not offered their condolences, nor made a simple phone call to us. I guess we also have not been paying much attention to that and only focusing on Reeva. But now that you ask, it makes one very upset,” Steenkamp told City Press on Friday.

He also said he did not know why Pistorius, who shot Reeva dead in the early hours of Valentine’s Day, had not approached them as a family – or at the very least Reeva’s parents – to offer his condolences.

Steenkamp’s comments contradict those of Pistorius’ uncle Arnold, who said that his family had made contact with the Steenkamps.

Michael said the fact that the Pistoriuses had not made any contact with them since the tragedy was proof that they did “not view Reeva’s death seriously”.

“It looks like they have their priorities mixed. They don’t take this matter seriously. To them it seems it is all about Oscar and there is no consideration to what had happened to our Reeva,” said an upset Steenkamp who has been acting as family spokesperson since the death of his niece.

He also urged the media to find out why Pistorius or his family had not done so.

In an exclusive interview published in Beeld yesterday, Reeva’s mother June said she had cried herself “empty”.

“I just want to mourn my daughter. I will have to get used to life without her,” she said, while rubbing her sobbing husband Barry’s back.

Barry Steenkamp told Beeld Pistorius will have to live with his conscience.

“There are only two people who know what happened: Oscar and the Lord. It doesn’t matter how much money he has or how great his lawyers are – he must be able to live with his conscience if he allows his legal team to tell lies on his behalf.”

Barry said he might forgive Oscar if he told the truth.

“If that doesn’t happen he will have to suffer. And he will suffer?.?.?.?he knows.”

June Steenkamp said the flowers from the Pistorius family meant “nothing”.

But she felt sorry for Oscar’s father and sister.

Reeva’s parents are planning to start a trust or foundation in their daughter’s name to assist female victims of abuse.

Michael Steenkamp says it was all about Oscar for the Pistorius family.

“We are disappointed as a family. One would have hoped they’d have offered some sort of condolence at this stage, but it’s all about Oscar, Oscar, Oscar while we are still mourning Reeva, who did not deserve to die the way she did.”

In court, Pistorius has been flanked by his uncle Arnold, his father Henke, his brother Carl, and his sister Aimee.

On Tuesday, Reeva was cremated following a private memorial service in her home town of Port Elizabeth.

Media from all over the world have, for days, been camping outside the family’s home in the suburb of Seaview.

Reeva’s half-brother, Adam, who read the eulogy at the “very tense” service, spoke fondly of his half-sister.

“There is space missing inside all the people that she knew. It can’t be filled again. We are going to keep all the positive things we remember and knew about my sister.” – Additional reporting by Athandiwe Saba
