Oscar ‘won’t jump on next plane’

2013-03-28 11:57

Oscar Pistorius is not insensitive to his murder case and he doesn’t want to jump onto the next flight out of the country, defence lawyer Advocate Barry Roux argued in the North Gauteng High Court today.

Pistorius’ legal team has approached the court to relax his bail conditions.

Roux argued that Pistorius had the right to appeal the conditions as they were only agreed upon because it was late on a Friday afternoon when the magistrate ruled that Pistorius would get bail.

Roux said the bail conditions imposed on Pistorius were unnecessarily stringent and similar to being placed under house arrest.

Seemingly the biggest point of contention was the restriction on Pistorius’ travelling.

Roux argued a better arrangement would be for Pistorius to hand over his passport to the investigating officer. When he needed it to travel, he should be allowed to make use of it and be allowed to travel overseas under “controlled circumstances”.

But state Advocate Gerrie Nel argued that this would place an administrative burden on the investigator. “The investigator would simply rubber stamp the application as he has other work to do,” said Nel.

Judgment is expected at 12:30pm.
