Overtaking taxi driver gets a criminal record

2011-01-06 13:01

A 33-year-old North West taxi driver was arrested and fined R1 000 and now has a criminal record for overtaking on a barrier line, the provincial department of public safety and liaison said today.

Sipho Lindelani Buthelezi pleaded guilty in the Swartruggens Magistrates Court yesterday to reckless driving and for driving a taxi without the required public driving permit, spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said.

Buthelezi overtook on a barrier line on the R509 Magaliesburg-Swartruggens road in North West two weeks ago.

Buthelezi, who was transporting 12 passengers in a minibus taxi from Johannesburg to Zeerust, was pulled over by provincial traffic officers near Skierlik in the Koster district.

Acting North West MEC for public safety and liaison Magome Masike said the sentence would serve as a deterrent to other road users to avoid moving violations that cause tragic accidents on roads.
