Paid parking ‘drives business away’

2012-05-07 08:52

The paid kerbside parking expected to start in some Johannesburg suburbs on June 1, would harm businesses there.

It would cost R8 an hour to park in the streets of Rosebank, Roodepoort, Melville, Florida, Norwood and Fordsburg. This would increase to R8.50 by July 1.

Many of the businesses in these suburbs have slid into decline in recent years, and residents and business owners claimed the introduction of paid parking was going to chase customers away, the Star reported today.

Although the system, run by Ace Parking, was set to be rolled out in three weeks, apparently not a single residents’ association or councillor had been consulted, as required in terms of the contract.

Mike Clark, the director of Servest Parking, under which Ace Parking falls, confirmed the plan was to start implementation by June 1.

He said it was the responsibility of the council to communicate the plans with residents and councillors.
