Pakistan hangs 7 militants

2015-01-13 11:02

Islamabad – Pakistan has executed seven convicts sentenced to die by the courts for involvement in Islamist militancy, an official said.

Three were hanged in Sukkur and one in Karachi in the southern province of Sindh, while another two were executed in Faisalabad and one in Rawalpindi in the eastern province of Punjab.

No formal announcement was made but an official from the interior ministry confirmed the hangings this morning.

“Those executed today belonged to banned militant outfits and were convicted for killings,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

Pakistan had already hanged nine prisoners before today’s executions, after the lifting of a moratorium in the wake of the attack on a school in Peshawar last month that killed 136 students.

According to the ministry official, Pakistan has more than 8 000 prisoners on death row.
