Palazollo nabbed in Thailand

2012-03-31 18:03

Suspected Sicilian mobster Vito Palazollo, who has lived in South Africa for more than 20 years, has finally been arrested in Thailand.

Norman Snitcher, Palazollo’s attorney in South Africa, yesterday confirmed to City Press that he had been arrested in Thailand, but refused to provide any further details.

Palazollo was found guilty in absentia of the crime of “mafia association”, in Palermo, Sicily in 2006.
He was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment.

The South African government has repeatedly attempted to extradite the 65-year-old but the crime of mafia association is not a punishable offence here.

Before entering South Africa through the former homeland of Ciskei in 1986, Palazollo served a three-year sentence in a Swiss prison for an offence related to the international heroin trade.

Palazollo, who has also used the name Robert von Palace Kobachenko, has consistently denied any links with the mafia and said he was being persecuted by the Sicilian government.

A 1997 presidential task force investigation accused Palazollo of being a “banker” for the Mafia in Italy. This was borne out by witness statements in Palazollo’s Palermo case, which said that he had been financing mafia activities from abroad.

The presidential report alleged that Cyril Beeka – last year gunned down in a hit that has been linked with Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir – acted as an agent for Palazollo.
