Palazzolo’s lawyers try to stop deportation

2012-04-20 09:42

Alleged Italian mafia member Vito Palazzolo’s lawyers have approached the Western Cape High Court in a bid to keep him from being deported to Italy.

The 64-year-old’s lawyers are trying to get an order to have the South African government give him diplomatic assistance as his chances of being deported to Italy would be diminished if the embassy could confirm his citizenship, The Times reported.

Palazzolo is currently in jail in Thailand after flying there from Hong Kong.

He is allegedly a wanted member of the Sicilian mafia and is being investigated for money laundering.

The probe was started by the now-defunct Scorpions and taken over by the Hawks.

In March 2003, Palazzolo was found not guilty of fraudulently acquiring citizenship by the Cape Town Regional Court.
