Pandor on White Widow: It might have been easy to get a passport at the time

She doesn’t think it’s easy to get a South African passport now but it “might have been easy at the time” when the “white widow” acquired one, Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor has said.

The passport of Samantha Lewthwaite, who has been linked to the attack at the Westgate mall in Nairobi, was fraudulently acquired, Pandor said today during a media briefing in Pretoria.

Lewthwaite is known as the “white widow”.

“It (the passport) was investigated and reported on in 2011. It was cancelled at the time as it was found to be acquired fraudulently,” she said.

Pandor said further investigations were needed to determine how Lewthwaite acquired a passport under the name Natalie Faye Webb.

She said the passport was no longer a legal document.

“I don’t think it’s easy to get a South African passport. It might have been easy at the time.”
