Parties sign electoral code of conduct

2011-03-10 12:58

Political parties competing in the local government elections signed an electoral code of conduct today to promote peace and tolerance of all views.

“The authority in election matters, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), has set the rules and we are all expected to conform,” said Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane.

“This document is a levelling of the playing field so that no party can have an unfair advantage,” said Mokonyane.

The parties that agreed to the code and who would be contesting the elections were the African Christian Democratic Party, African National Congress, African People’s Convention, Azanian People’s Organisation, Congress of the People, Democratic Alliance, Independent Democrats, Inkatha Freedom Party, Pan African Congress of Azania, United Christian Democratic Party, United Democratic Movement and the Freedom Front Plus.

The IEC put to rest media reports that it was aligned with the ANC.

“We are impartial ... and you should be cautious of those who attack the integrity of the IEC,” said the commission’s chairwoman, Brigalia Bam.

“We are indeed ready for the elections and are satisfied with the number of people on our voters’ roll,” she said.

Local government elections would take place on May 18.
