Paul Boughey has been appointed the Democratic Alliance’s new chief executive and will succeed outgoing chief executive Jonathan Moakes in January.

Boughey, currently working as chief of staff to Cape Town mayor Patricia de Lille, announced his appointment on Twitter this morning:

“It is an honour to have been appointed chief executive of the DA from [January] next year. Looking forward to working with the team to build on our successes.”

In his next tweet he thanked people for their “kind words of support”.

Boughey was appointed in De Lille’s office in 2011 and advised her on her political programme.

Before that he was head of ministry for Education MEC Donald Grant, and head of parliamentary operations for the DA.

Moakes handed in his letter of resignation a month ago, after running the DA’s operations as chief executive for five years. This entails heading the financial, research and support staff who are responsible for the day-to-day running of the party.

Moakes said he wanted to devote more time to his young family.

Before Moakes, Ryan Coetzee served in the position from 2004 to 2009.

Boughey’s first big job will be to see the DA through the 2016 local government elections.
