Paying for a burger and only getting a bun

2013-05-27 11:30

On Sunday Miles Davis would have been 87. Miles died in 1991. Miles was only 65. Miles had a busy 65 years. Miles cut countless albums in a 50-year career. Miles won nine Grammy Awards. Nine.

Miles was a mad composer, band leader and musical visionary. Miles reinvented jazz. Repeatedly. Miles made Kind of Blue. Miles gave birth to Bitches Brew. Miles was a genius. Miles was a crazy. Miles was a coke fiend and a smack head. Miles was Miles. Miles was the man.

I never saw Miles play live. Bummer.

Not as big a bummer as the stunt the city of Durban is about to pull on its residents. Word from city hall has it that the city will finally release the Manase report on Wednesday.

Remember Manase? Manase was this forensic audit appointed by Cooperative Governance MEC Nomusa Dube into dirty dealings in the city by her comrades in council. Two years ago.

Since then the council has given the odd comrade a tap on the wrist for being naughty. And the odd promotion. Without giving the public any idea of what the report said about who broke which rules.

Now, we are told, the long-awaited report is being made public. Fair enough.

But there’s one small snag, some small print. The annexures to the report, which contain the real detail about who did what wrong and who ate what, won’t be part of the report. Oh no, none of that. They will continue to be kept under wraps by the city.

Ratepayers and other members of the public won’t be allowed the full truth. That’s like paying for a burger and only getting a bun. Only the dry, doughy parts and no meat.

What a rip-off.
