Phelps happy to be back

American swimming super star Michael Phelps on Saturday said he was back at his best, after not having a good year.

Phelps, who is the most decorated Olympic athlete, having won 14 gold medals, said ahead of Sunday’s start of the swimming competition at the aquatics world championships he had realised that if he wanted something he would have to go and get it himself.

“What has brought me back is taking charge of my own actions. I wanted to do it for myself, not because the coach was twisting my arm. I have to want to do it. The last six to eight months that has happened.”

“I am in a lot better shape than last year, I think I have confidence whereas last year I did not know what to expect. So I am waiting to see how my body can handle this for next year”.

Phelps said that he is happy to be back in China, as he feels its a lucky place for him after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he became the first athlete to win eight gold medals at a single Olympics.

“I hope that I can have luck on my side this week. To come back is exciting as I have a lot of great memories here.”

He said he was looking forward to swimming the 200m freestyle against German Paul Biedermann.

“You know how much I hate to lose and he had me pretty bad beat-down at the last worlds in 2009.”

Phelps believes that some records could fall. “A lot of world records are super fast and will take a lot to break, but there are some that can be broken.”

He reiterated that next year’s Olympics in London would be his last. “Everybody has a time when they want to move forward. I am excited for the next year and then excited to move on and try something else.

“But it is hard to think about hanging up my suit. But now I have a year left and I’ll have fun.”
