The real Mandela in movies

In the 1992 Spike Lee biographical film Malcolm X, Nelson Mandela – recently released from prison – had a cameo role as a Soweto schoolteacher reciting a portion of one of Malcolm X’s most famous speeches.

The 1996 documentary Mandela: Son of Africa, Father of a Nation is Madiba’s official film biography. Co-produced by Jonathan Demme, who directed The Silence of the Lambs, it features exclusive interviews with and narrations by Mandela himself. It was nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar.
