As South Africa hosts the 2010 Fifa World Cup there has been some

debate over the origin of the plastic trumpet that has become the defining sound

of the tournament.

The Shembe, also known as the Nazareth Baptist Church, has always

used an air-horn, known as imbomu, as a centrepiece in their religious rituals.

body, Safa, defended the right for the country’s citizens to blow their

vuvuzelas at matches as a mark of support, this church hopes that it will
