Pienaar retires from international football

South African midfielder and Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar has retired from international football.

The Everton midfielder’s decision overshadowed Bafana Bafana’s team announcement today.

The Bafana captain sent a letter to Safa chief executive and coach Gordon Igesund yesterday afternoon stating his immediate retirement from the team.

Igesund said he respected the Everton’s midfielder’s decision but would speak to him in the near future.

“The door is not closed on him or anyone else,” said Igesund.

Igesund made nine changes to the previous team that played Brazil.

Veteran winger Delron Buckley, who has been in top form for Maritzburg United, has been recalled to the team after more than five years in the wilderness.

Mamelodi Sundowns captain Teko Modise, who was overlooked for the Brazil game, was also recalled.
