Pierre Korkie is alive, says Gift of the Givers

South African teacher Pierre Korkie, who is being held hostage by al-Qaeda for a ransom of about R32 million, is alive, charity organisation Gift of the Givers has said.

“We have achieved a stay-in-execution for now. We have been granted a three-week extension,” said chairperson Imtiaz Sooliman in a statement.

The initial deadline for paying the ransom expired at 6am this morning.

Earlier this week, the captors cut a call during which Gift of the Givers explained that even with an extension they may not be able to raise the required amount.

“After a break in communication for almost 72 hours we called them last night (Friday) at 11pm and left a message that we need to meet. They called back and replied in the affirmative ... The meeting was cordial and decent. We agreed to pursue further discussions in the days to come.”

Sooliman said Korkie’s captors “volunteered information that Pierre is not in good health”.
