Tokyo – The Japanese police don’t discriminate. Their dogs don’t have to be intimidating German shepherds. A 3kg Chihuahua there has just won promotion into police ranks.

The 7-year-old Momo passed an induction test in Nara prefecture, located in the southern part of Honshu Island, to rise into the police-dog ranks, the Kyodo News agency reported today.

The delicate female with white- and brown-flecked, long hair showed she would be no pushover on the job: During a disaster-management exercise, she was able to sniff out the location of a trapped person within five minutes, provincial police said.

Momo, trained to take part in search and rescue missions after earthquakes or other disasters, was due to take up her new duties at the beginning in January, they said.
