Pirates: We’re not scared to lose – but we’re determined to win

2014-07-30 14:14

Orlando Pirates want to pick up where they left off last season and win this year’s MTN8 tournament.

Pirates finished the season on a high with their Nedbank Cup victory and their aim is to continue with that winning streak.

The Nedbank Cup success was the Buccaneers’ first trophy in four attempts after losing three previous finals.

But coach Vladimir Vermezovic is optimistic he has instilled a winning mentality in the players.

He says they are no longer scared of losing, judging by their competitive level in training.

“They want to win every game they are involved in and that is good for their morale. We are not scared to lose but the players want it more,” he says at this morning’s press conference in Johannesburg.

Pirates welcome their match with SuperSport United in the quarterfinal of the season, opening MTN8 at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday evening.

Vermezovic says they will not prioritise any one tournament over another and will take it one game at a time.

“There is no pressure on us to win everything but our aim is to do well in all the competitions we take part in. We are about 80% ready.”

Pirates striker Kermit Erasmus, whose brace against Bidvest Wits secured the Nedbank Cup for Bucs in May, says it is important to start the season on a good note.

Erasmus will come up against his former teammates at United and says they should not be taken for granted.

“United have been busy on the market and we should treat them cautiously. We are happy with our preparations and I think we will be ready for the weekend,” Erasmus says.
