Pitso drops Mbazo

Three of Bafana Bafana’s most experienced players have been axed from the team that will play the crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt next weekend.

Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane has cut captain Aaron “Mbazo” Mokoena, Teko Modise and Macbeth Sibaya from the squad.

Mosimane said it did not mean the door would be closed to these players. He said he would consider them in future as and when the need arises.

“I know what they can do for the team and their experience will come in very handy one day. But for now they are not part of the team. Let’s respect the coach’s decision,” said Mosimane.

Bafana welcome back striker Katlego Mphela who missed the game against Kenya because he was not active at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Wayne Sandilands, also of Sundowns, replaces the injured Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs.

Mosimane has also invited eight players who will be with the team from Thursday to Sunday, when the overseas players arrive.

Bafana are currently leading Group G with four points, after beating Niger 2-0 and drawing 0-0 with Sierra Leone.

Egypt are rooted at the bottom of the group with one point after drawing at home against the Leone Stars and losing to Niger away from home.

They need to get their campaign back on track and a win at Ellis Park will put them on same points as Bafana.
