South African marathon king Lusapho April will line up at the Boston Marathon start on Monday.

April had a storming 2013, finishing third in his debut New York City Marathon and winning the Hannover Marathon in Germany last May.

Now expectations are high for another impressive run by the 31-year-old amid a threat from a huge contingent of Kenyans and Ethiopians at the Boston race on Easter Monday.

He has already settled in the US city, tweeting on Thursday that he did “an easy run down by the Charles River” and had also gone for a “blood doping” test.

April was part of a three-man SA marathon team that finished fourth at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, last month.

He finished 15th in a personal best time of 1:01:16.

Interestingly, April sticks to a prerace tradition of eating pizza the night before every race.

Meanwhile, thousands gathered to mark the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, where two pressure cooker bombs exploded and killed three people and left many wounded.

As a result, race organisers have since prohibited the carrying of backpacks and handbags by participants and spectators.
