Plane crash survivor leaves for home

2010-05-15 10:54

Nine-year-old Dutch boy Ruben van Assouw, the sole survivor of a

plane crash that killed 103 people, left for home today aboard a Libyan air

ambulance.

He flew out from Matiga military airfield on the Cessna Citation

jet aircraft accompanied by his uncle and aunt and the doctor who had been

treating him at Tripoli’s Al-Khadra hospital.

The Dutch foreign ministry has refused to disclose the aircraft’s

destination, but the Dutch federation of tour operators said it would land at

Eindhoven military airport.

Before leaving, Ruben’s doctor, Siddiq ben Dilla, told AFP the boy

was in good health.

“He’s a very special patient. He is talking and in good health.

I

will stay (in the Netherlands) for as long as necessary,” he said.

Yesterday, his aunt and uncle released a statement saying they had

told the boy of the deaths of his parents, Trudy and Patrick van Assouw, and his

brother, Enzo.

“Considering the circumstances, Ruben is doing well.

He sleeps a

lot. Now and then he is awake and .?.?. is clear,” they said in the statement,

read to reporters by a Dutch foreign ministry official Ed Kronenburg.

“We told Ruben exactly what has happened.

He knows both his parents and brother are deceased.

Now with the whole

family we will take care of Ruben’s future,” they said.
