Planning for your perfect holiday

It starts with a plan – finding a suitable place and starting a dedicated savings account – and getting the family involved by encouraging them to save, writes Maya Fisher-French.

With school holidays in full swing, most South Africans are on holiday and some are planning time off.

However, a recent survey conducted by Groupon South Africa found that while South Africans were desperate to go on holiday, more than 50% said they simply could not afford it as holiday accommodation was too expensive and the current tough economy was holding them back.

A further 27% of South Africans surveyed believed that winter holidays were a luxury they could not afford and about 31% said they would love a break, but could not seem to find the time to do so.

If you are one of many South Africans who really need a break but don’t want to break the bank, you need to have a plan in place.

The holiday plan
It may be too late to save for this winter break but by starting a dedicated savings plan you will be ready for next your holiday.

Start by doing some research to find a suitable place.

According to Groupon 84% of respondents said that they are willing to spend between R500-R1000 per night on accommodation.

The good news is that in tough economic conditions hotels are also feeling the pinch so there are a lot of discount deals available through websites like Groupon, Daddy Deals and City Slickers for example.

According to Groupon the most popular holiday is in the Western Cape with 63% of those surveyed saying that this would be their preferred destination, especially the Garden Route.

Once you and your family have selected a destination and worked out how much it will cost, get the family involved by encouraging them save their pocket money for holiday spending money and to forego other treats in order to reach the goal.

If you have a goal in place it will be easier not buy that extra pair of shoes if it means being able to go on holiday.

If you have decided to throw caution to the wind and plan on pulling out the credit card to fund your break then at least have a repayment plan in place.

Again do you budget – self-catering can be a lot cheaper, especially if you have a large family.

Work out how much you need to repay each month and make sure you have cleared your holiday debt in six months (just in time for the festive season!)

Spoil yourself without breaking the bank
You don’t have to go away to have a break.

According to Groupon “37% of respondents said come rain or shine, they will never miss an opportunity to go out and experience new places and adventures and 69% say that affordable cozy restaurants and spa pamper sessions would get them out of their homes and experiencing their city this winter”.

There are a plethora of deals at spas and restaurants this winter so you can spoil yourself without breaking the bank.

Take a day or two off work and take your loved one out for a special meal and pamper yourself for the day.
