The Polokwane Magistrates’ Court is in lockdown ahead of the expected appearance of expelled ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema.

A black Mercedes Benz Viano Malema is known to travel in was spotted entering the Polokwane Police Station, although Malema himself could not be seen through tinted windows.

Barbed wire spanned across roads by police prevented hundreds of Malema supporters from getting near the court.

Three armoured police Nyalas and a water cannon were on standby.

The supporters screamed their support for Malema, carrying placards with phrases such as “No to Zulufication of the ANC”.

Many supporters made the substitution sign and called for President Jacob Zuma to be replaced.

Some of the placards also contained messages that were overtly anti-Zuma.

One read: “Please God take Jacob Zuma, before we take him.”

The courtroom was packed with media and Malema supporters, including suspended ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.

Malema is expected to appear on charges of money-laundering related to R4.6 million allegedly received by his Ratanang Family Trust.

The state alleges that these were the proceeds of an allegedly fraudulent tender awarded by the Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport to On-Point Engineers.

He will appear in the next hour.
