Police confiscate weapons from Marikana bus

2013-08-16 16:32

Traditional weapons were confiscated from passengers in a bus en route to Marikana commemorations.

“People in a bus from the Impala Platinum mine were found to be in possession of approximately 100 traditional weapons, which were confiscated,” police spokesperson Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said in a statement.

The bus was on its way to the commemoration event taking place in Marikana near Rustenburg where 44 people were killed during a wage-related strike at Lonmin’s Marikana mine.

Thirty-four miners were killed on August 16 last year when police fired on them while trying to disperse and disarm them.

Another 10 people had been killed in strike-related violence in the preceding week.

Groups of people who entered the venue with weapons were also stopped and asked to hand them over to police, said Ngubane.

“The police will continue to monitor the situation and again we call for calm from all parties and participants.”
