Police fire on scholars

2011-01-31 14:35

Police fired rubber bullets to disperse a group of protesting scholars near Hazyview on Monday, Mpumalanga police said.

“They went on a rampage at Bhekiswayo Secondary School, disrupting classes and breaking windows,” said Captain Leonard Hlathi.

“We fired rubber bullets and stabilised the situation, but no arrests were made,” he said.

The Grade 11 pupils, who failed last year, started toyi-toying at 9am.

They were demanding to be promoted to Grade 12.

“They were also coercing other pupils at the school to join their protest,” said Hlathi.

No injuries were reported, but a case of malicious damage to property was opened.

Police said they would be back to monitor activity at the school tomorrow.
