Police investigating newborn’s death

2010-07-21 08:00

A case of concealment of birth has opened after the body of a newborn baby was found in a field in Orlando, Soweto, Gauteng police have said.

Captain Phephi Matlou could not say if the baby had been burned, as was reported by The Times newspaper.

“We are waiting for a pathologist’s report,” said Matlou this morning.

The Times newspaper published a photograph of the dead baby on its front page today, with editorial comment by editor Phylicia Oppelt.

“This child’s death should make us ask about the society we want to inhabit, the society we want to create for our children,” wrote Oppelt.

“The dumping of a child – irrespective of the circumstances – must make us ask what value we attach to that most wonderful Constitution of ours.”
