Police kill church group robber

2010-10-05 15:23

A robber was shot dead and another arrested after a gang robbed a church group in Vanderbijlpark, south of Johannesburg.

“It is alleged that four suspects armed with three pistols and a R5 rifle entered the premises while the owner and other people were having a church group meeting,” said Warrant Officer Kinnie Steyn.

“The doors of the house were open as they were still expecting other church members to join the group.”

This happened at a house in Patterson Street at about 8pm yesterday.

The robbers overpowered the people inside the house and took cellphones, a television, laptops and a Volkswagen Polo.

“The owner’s daughter managed to hide inside a dog house and alerted the Vanderbijlpark police ... the members responded quickly while the suspects were still at the scene,” said Steyn.

One of the robbers ran away, two others fled in a silver BMW and the fourth robber fled in the stolen VW Polo.

“The police pursued the suspects in the silver BMW as the VW Polo had already left the scene before their arrival.”

The driver of the BMW lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a fence.

The two robbers then tried to run away and one of them tried to hijack another BMW.

“The police members managed to locate the suspect while he was attempting to hijack the vehicle. The suspect ran from them and allegedly fired a shot at the police. The members returned fire and the suspect was fatally wounded and died on the scene.”

The second robber was arrested with help from community members.
