Police raid home of alleged serial rapist

2010-11-10 06:59

The home of a man believed to have committed at least 12 rapes since August in the Hillbrow area has been raided by police, Gauteng police said today.

“We have identified the man and have a photo of him, and we raided his home at about 4pm yesterday but missed him by a few minutes,” said spokesperson Colonel Gerard Labuschagne.

He said police were hoping to get a warrant of arrest for the man today and would then publicise his name.

“His home is in the southern part of Johannesburg. We didn’t find any items belonging to his victims but we did find some exhibits.”

He declined to go into more detail about the “exhibits”.

Labuschagne says the man targets young black females between the ages of 19 and 21 in and around the Johannesburg and Pretoria areas.

The man approaches a group of women and invites them to celebrate his birthday with him at a nearby restaurant or bar.

He then asks one of them to accompany him to fetch his sister or a friend, taking a metered-taxi into Hillbrow or central Johannesburg.

He then lures her into a room in a hotel under the pretext of fetching his sister or the friend, or his luggage.

Once inside the room he rapes the woman, detaining her overnight.

“He threatens the victim so she doesn’t scream. He has also tied some of them up and has had a firearm with him on one occasion.

“In the morning he tells the victim that he is going to draw money or get food and after a while she realises the door is unlocked and she is free.”

Labuschagne said the last rape that is suspected of being committed by the man was reported last week.
